Finding the Name That Stuck

When I decided to start my own consultancy, I thought coming up with a company name would be a quick job. Pick a name, buy the domain, done. Easy.

Ha. No.

Instead, I went down a rabbit hole of names that ranged from too boring to remember to so cringey I couldn’t even say them out loud.

At one stage, I was convinced The Wendon Group was the one!!

It sounded safe. Professional. The kind of name you’d trust with your taxes. The problem? I’m not an accountant. And it had about as much personality as a piece of ham.

Then there were the “try-hard” names. Anything with “rocket” or “engine” in it made me sound like I was selling get-rich-quick courses on YouTube.

What I really wanted was something that told people what I do…help companies accelerate their sales…but with a bit of character. Something people would remember and, ideally, smile at.

That’s when Accsellerate happened.

Yes, it’s a play on words. Yes, “sell” is right there in red. And yes, I may have high-fived myself when I thought of it. It’s memorable, says what I do, and makes it clear we’re about moving faster, selling more, and doing it in a way that lasts.

The best part? The domain was available. That was my “this is it” moment. (Also, let’s be honest, after three weeks of overthinking, I just wanted to stop Googling domain names.)

And here’s the thing about names, business or band.

At first, they might sound ridiculous. Manic Street Preachers. Pink Floyd. Foo Fighters. But after a few hits, nobody questions them. They just become the name. That’s what I wanted for my business: a name that, once people had a few great experiences with it, simply fit.

Naming a business is part art, part strategy, and part “will this make me cringe in five years?”

For me, Accsellerate ticked all the boxes. And now, when people hear it, they get it. Even better…they remember it.
